  About the Credit and Fraud Risk (CFR) Team

The CFR team at American Express plays a critical role in enabling profitable business growth by reducing risks, such as fraud, and maintaining some of the lowest credit loss rates in the industry. The team uses advanced technology and analytics to fight fraud, reduce unnecessary spending disruptions, and enhance the customer experience. By applying data and digital advancements, the CFR team is constantly innovating risk management practices and driving business decisions across the organization.

The CFR Analytics & Data Science Center of Excellence (CoE) leads data-driven initiatives to improve risk management, enable commerce, and foster innovation. Every decision at American Express—from customer targeting and product underwriting to managing customer experience—is informed by analytics and data science, making this team a critical backbone of the company’s operations.

Role Overview

As an Analyst-Data Science, you’ll be part of a team that builds and validates predictive models to drive decisions across risk, fraud, and marketing. You’ll leverage big data and machine learning to create innovative solutions, and work closely with leadership and business partners to present insights and findings. This role offers exposure to industry leaders in analytics and data science, giving you the chance to work on complex, real-world business problems that impact millions of customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Understand Core Business: Gain in-depth knowledge of American Express's core business, particularly the decision-making levers in risk, fraud, and marketing.
• Data Analysis & Insights: Analyze large datasets to extract meaningful business insights and develop innovative solutions that support decision-making processes.
• Leverage Data & Technology: Utilize the closed-loop data from Amex’s network to enhance decision-making capabilities and increase relevance.
• Innovate with Big Data & Machine Learning: Continuously innovate and explore new approaches using big data technologies and machine learning techniques to enhance decision-making.
• Communicate Findings: Clearly articulate complex findings and insights to leadership and key partners, ensuring they are actionable and aligned with business objectives.
• Stay Updated: Keep an external focus on developments in the fields of finance, payments, analytics, and related technologies to stay ahead of industry trends. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Educational Background: MBA, Master’s Degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields.
• Experience: 0-30 months of experience in analytics, big data workstreams, or related areas.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in tools and technologies such as SAS, R, Python, Hive, Spark, and SQL.
• Machine Learning: Experience with both unsupervised and supervised techniques, including active learning, transfer learning, decision trees, reinforcement learning, neural models, graphical models, and Bayesian models.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to solve complex problems, quickly learn new concepts, and handle unstructured initiatives independently.
• Team Collaboration: Strong ability to work effectively in a team environment, integrating with cross-functional business partners across the globe.

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise in Coding & Algorithms: Strong coding skills and experience with algorithms, high-performance computing, and big data processing.
